Review: Le Blanc de Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base

On my last trip to Switzerland in January I had a chance to snap up some goodies at Duty Free that I’ve been eyeing for a while. One of them was the Le Blanc de Chanel – Sheer  Illuminating Base, which I am going to review today.

I’ve been looking for a new primer since I started breaking out from my previous one. I’ve read good things about this Chanel primer and one of the claims that attracted me to it was that “it instantly illuminates the complexion”. Ah, I just can’t help lusting after anything that promises to make skin radiant and looking dewy,  so I just had to go for it!

I’ve been using it for the last 3 months – plenty of time to test and  make up my mind about itt, so let’s go into some more details:

Packaging: The bottle is made of thick glass with a frosted look, while the lid is plastic with the typical Chanel logo engraved on top of it. Despite the size, the bottle is quite heavy and not very suitable for travel. Like all Chanel products, the design is simple yet elegant and classy. There is a very inconvenient downside to the design though: The screw-on cap. Because of the consistence of the primer and the bottle design, I was expecting a pump, but instead the opening of the bottle is wide enough to scoop the primer out with a plastic spatula (included). Personally, I’m not a big fan of this as it makes it hard to get the right amount of primer (I tend to either get too much or too little), and is also less hygienic, and messy. I really hope the future versions of this will have a pump!

Consistency & Colour: The primer is white and more on the runny side with a light floral scent to it that fades quickly once applied. It feels a bit sticky to the touch at first but once you blend it on your skin with a brush or your fingers it dries to an almost powdery finish. Don’t worry about the white colour, it will actually not make you whiter or looking pale. Once it’s on the skin it just blends in with your natural skin tone.

Application & Wear: I’ve tried both applying it with my fingers and using a brush, and while I didn’t notice a big difference in the result, I prefer using a brush to avoid sticky fingers. As mentioned before, while blending the primer in  it will feel a bit sticky at first, but after a few seconds dry to a semi-matte, velvety finish. After application, skin looks more even, glossier and some of the redness is cancelled out.  I noticed that on days where my skin was dry from the cold weather it can accentuate creases and flaky patches, so make sure your skin is well moisturised before using it! It did, however, make it easier to apply foundation or bb cream afterwards and the result looked considerably smoother than without primer. I also noticed that my makeup lasted longer on days when I used this primer; which is very important to me since I’m not a big fan of constant touch-ups! In terms of oil-control I didn’t notice much of an improvemente, but it also didn’t aggravate it like my previous one did. However it means I still get an oily t-zone in the afternoon *sigh*.

Final thoughts: I really like this primer! It leaves skin looking velvety and bright and makes it easier to apply foundation or bb cream after. I also like the fact that you can either use it under your foundation or as a highlighter over it.  It doesn’t make the face look too shiny or oily but instead gives a subtle shine and just makes my skin look overall healthier. I wouldn’t say it’s a holy grail product for me but it’s definitely worth trying! If you have issues with fragrances in beauty products you might want to skip this though as it does contain perfume. The only downsides of this product are the very impractical packaging and the fact that it can to some extent accentuate dry and flaky patches.

What do you think of Chanel products? Have you ever tried their primer or other make-up? If so let me know, I’d love to hear your opinions! 🙂

See you soon,

  1. Haven’t used this primer but the way you reviewed makes me want to at least try it out . I really like Chanel’s loose powder though and the inimitable mascara. Their lipsticks are swoon-worthy and I like most of the foundations. Great review ! Xx

    1. Thank you so much! It is a very nice product, I just wish they would change the packaging, it’s so inconvenient for a clumsy person like me…Oh I’ve been wanting to get the loose powder for ages, a lot of people swear by it! Next time I’m at a Duty Free I’m definitely going to grab it 😉
