Beautifying Eats: Fermented Food

Today I’m going to change things up a little and sway towards a new topic…food!

We all look after our skin daily by applying creams, lotions and masks to keep it looking  plump and hydrated, but in a time where stress rules, sleep is scarce and pollution seems to be everywhere, much more is needed to help keep skin healthy and youthful.

You’ve probably heard the saying “you are what you eat“. Well, just how your body looks and feels because of what you eat, your skin condition also reflects on your diet. Ever had a breakout after eating chocolate, or woke up to a puffy face after eating salty food? Then you know what I’m talking about.

We can help improve the appearance of out skin by eating plenty of healthy food such as fruits, veggies and oily fish like tuna and salmon. But there’s also another, maybe less known type that, when consumed regularly, can make a big difference in your general well-being and make you glow! I’m talking about fermented food.

Fermented food has passed through a process of lactofermentation that ultimately transforms sugar and starch to healthy enzymes, vitamins and probiotics.

Some popular fermented foods include plain yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir, tempeh, miso and kimchi.

I will go into a bit more detail about the 3 fermented foods I try to eat on a daily basis: yogurt, miso and kimchi.

YogBerOatCreFraurt: Full of probiotics that help in digestion, yogurt also helps to improve the immune system and makes you feel fuller while also being full of vitamins like potassium, iodine, zinc and vitamin B5. It’s also great for bone-strength and can help prevent osteoporosis. I usually eat yogurt mixed with berries and oatmeal as a breakfast or add a few spoons of it to my smoothies to make them richer.



Miso: Originally from Japan, miso paste is a seasoning made by fermenting soybeans and typically rice or barley. They come in different colours such as light yellow or red,  each tasting a bit different.In general, the lighter the colour, the milder and less salty the taste. Miso paste can be used for a variety of dishes such as the highly

miso3 popular miso soup, or as salad-dressing, glazings for fish and vegetables and so on. Miso is rich in antioxidants that fight against free radicals in your body. They can block the effects of free radicals (oxidation), thus slowing down the aging process.   Miso paste also contains linoleic acid which helps keep your skin soft and even-toned. Finally, it lowers the risk of certain cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer. How’s that for a power-food?

Kimchi: Last but not least, this super food is present at pretty much  every meal in Korean households and is made of vegetables, most commonly cabbage, Korean chile flakes and several other seasonings. Kimchi is high in fibre and contains vitamin A, which keeps skin moist and young, linoleic acid, vitamin B12 & B2, vitamin E and many more. It also contains vitamin c in conjunction with antioxidants. A study concluded that this combination found in kimchi is capable of regulating inflammations inside the body that accelerate aging. Kimchi is delicious on its own as a side dish, but you can also add it to soups or fried rice for example. kimchi

As you can see, not only do these foods help keeping you full and energised, they’re also anti-aging and help keep your skin wrinkle-free and looking young for longer! If you haven’t started incorporating fermented food into your diet yet, you’ve definitely got some good reasons to do so now!
